The two words “sonus” and “sonny” are used to create the company name of Sony. The word “sonus” in Latin represents words like sound and sonic. The other word “sonny” means little son. Used in combination, Sony is supposed to represent a very small group of young people who have the energy and passion towards unlimited creations and innovative ideas. In 1958, the company formally adopted “Sony Corporation” as its corporate name. The name Sony is easy to pronounce and read in any language. It also has a lively ring to it, fits comfortably with the spirit of freedom and open-mindedness.

Video Audio Integrated Operation (VAIO) is the brand slogan for many of Sony's computer products. The Sony Vaio was created to distinguish it from other items by encompassing the use of consumer audio and video along with the conventional computing products. The letters V and A of VAIO logo represents a cosine wave and the letters I and O represent the numerals one and zero. The logo symbolizes the analog and digital multimedia capabilities of the product line, as well as Sony's vision of entertainment and technological "convergence”.
